Fighting for Excellent Schools
As the son of a public school teacher, I have seen first-hand how important excellent schools are to our neighborhoods and to the long term strength of our state. We must move beyond the same empty promises to "improve our kids' schools", and take the fight right to those threatening our kids' education. We need properly funded schools, and we must make sure no one threatens that funding - like Mike Jacobs with his continuous support of school vouchers. Vouchers will not only siphon money from DeKalb schools, but will not be accepted by the majority of private schools. We have all seen school voucher programs fail nationwide.
Parents, teachers, and school officials must be free to return to emphasizing the fundamental skills we all learned when we were going to school. Georgia must move beyond student and teacher performance based on an avalanche of standardized tests. Students and teachers should be rewarded for their hard work: students with grades that reflect actual learning and performance; and teachers with better pay and smaller class sizes. As our next State Representative, I'll fight to make sure that our DeKalb County school tax dollars will be used right here in our DeKalb County schools - where they belong.
More Jobs - Less Traffic
I am a small business owner and I work hard to create jobs in our community. Every day in Atlanta I see the need for decent paying jobs with solid healthcare benefits that support hardworking Georgia families. I have the business creativity and drive to win the fight to bring more good jobs to Atlanta. And I have the business experience to know that we must balance growth with innovative yet real solutions to the traffic congestion we already face.
Our career politician, Mike Jacobs, has done nothing to help us with our traffic problems and he has not even tried to improve these issues. Our average commute in Metro Atlanta increases every year, and as our next State Representative I will fight for modern public transportation systems - including a MARTA overhaul, and make sure that any new development in our area makes sense to the way we really live our lives. I will help establish live-work-play communities that examine and plan for the real impact of new development on our existing roads and infrastructure. I will help our neighborhoods fight greedy developers and politicians who line their pockets at the expense of our families. I will fight for a comprehensive regional plan that places a premium on decreasing commute time, protecting and expanding green space, and doing more with what little space in our district we have left.
Keeping DeKalb Tax Money in DeKalb Neighborhoods
Living in DeKalb County I know what a big bite our property taxes take out of our paychecks. I know that our friends and families live in DeKalb because we know it is a great place to live, work, and raise children. We can do better with what we are spending, though. Right now too many of our hard earned tax dollars are taken out of the county by the state and spent on projects that have no benefit to DeKalb County families. As our next State Representative, I will fight to keep more of our tax dollars right here in DeKalb County, putting them to work improving our schools, our roadways and our parks - exactly where our tax dollars belong.
